In 1233, Pope Gregory IX nailed the last nail on a black cat’s coffin when he declared the black cat the incarnation of the devil. To prove their devotion, Christians began hunting black cats and burning them alive at festivals with the aim of punishing the demons in their cat’s clothing. By the 14th century, the situation worsened when cats were nearly extinct in some parts of Europe.
Centuries later, the black-demon-cat link naturally became an indisputable fact and this caused them to be considered witches. For superstitious people, black cats are said to be witches in disguise. Others say that a black cat will become a real witch if it lives continuously for 7 years in the wizarding community. Under the judicial laws of the 16th and 17th centuries, as long as you have a black cat, you will be considered a witch and will be sentenced to death.
