Depending on the subject and content, special libraries may also provide services such as research, reference, academic, public or children’s libraries, often with more stringent regulations.

Most libraries arrange material in a certain order based on the library classification system, so that titles can be found and retrieved efficiently. Some libraries have their own galleries to hold references. These reference shelves can let some outsiders come in, or force the reader to tell the staff to take the materials for themselves.
